Snacking on blueberry expanses upon sunlit hilltops: On a summit of a mountain in northern Virginia, I encountered ripe wild blueberries for the first time on the journey. They were delicious, perhaps because they were a reward for working my way up a long hill. The number of green berries yet to ripen indicated that there would be blue snacks available for a long stretch of the trail ahead. They grew wherever sunlight penetrated the canopy above, often near the top of the hills throughout Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Every time I found myself at the bottom of a hill, I knew there was a good chance a blueberry reward was waiting for me at the top.
